Sue Hamer

Painter

My work consists of small oil paintings on board, canvas, or paper. I’m drawn to the intimacy of a reduced scale and the focused attention it demands. The small format encourages close viewing, allowing a single image to hold the viewer’s attention. I’m interested in how a small painting can suggest a much larger space, like looking through a tiny window.

Using both found and original imagery, I reframe and crop images with techniques borrowed from film and photography. These fragments are translated into paint through restrained colour and subtle tonal shifts, creating quiet, suspended spaces that hover between landscape and recollection. The paintings often focus on isolated or overlooked subjects—weather balloons, insects, and children’s paddling pools.
