Sue Hamer
Painter
My work consists of small oil paintings on board, canvas, and paper. I like the intimacy of working on a reduced scale and the concentrated energy that can emerge. I am intrigued by how a small painting can suggest a much larger space, like looking through a tiny window.
I focus on isolated or overlooked subjects, such as weather balloons, flies, standing stones, and children’s paddling pools.
Working from both found and original imagery, I reframe and crop compositions using techniques borrowed from film and photography. These fragments are translated into paint through restrained colour and subtle tonal shifts, creating still, quiet spaces that hover between landscape and memory.
