Sheila Hay

It tells the story of the ELM tree and its unwanted visitor, the DUTCH ELM BEETLE.

The pages are etched with the life journey of the beetle; in through the elm bark, giving birth in the space between bark and sapwood and then the larvae’s migration out of the tree to colonize new wood.

The materials used are a significant part of the story:
16% of manufactured paper pulp worldwide is made from elm wood.
The glaze on the book cover is made with 50% elm wood ash, an ash glaze.

All the elm used is from infected street trees which have been felled in Eastbourne over the last 10 years.
