Judy Martin introducing Kath Dawson

In July, we headed out on a hot Summer's evening to the Atrium Gallery at the Marine Workshops in Newhaven to see Kath Dawson’s retrospective exhibition, ‘The Light of Day’. The Atrium is a large (19 x 7m) gallery space which was packed with as much work as Kath could fit in. She has never prioritised exhibiting or selling, but to celebrate her 70th birthday this year, she has decided to let her work see ‘The Light of Day’.

This is a wonderful exhibition featuring recent oil paintings inspired by the war in Ukraine as well as work from her entire life. At the start of the evening, Kath gave us a short talk on her life as an artist, with some thoughts on how life events and working space affect one’s work.

Kath picked up her formal art education following early retirement from an unrelated career, having dropped out after Foundation Year aged 19. She made up for lost time with a Fine Art foundation degree at Hastings College, an MA at Christ Church Canterbury. More recently, she completed the Turps Correspondence Course. She was shortlisted for the Jackson’s Art Prize 2025. You can see more of Kath’s work on Instagram here.

Kath has been a member of Blue Monkey since 2012. She plays an active part in the running of the network, managing the membership and finances, and is the person meeting you and checking you in at our monthly events.

BMN would like to thank Kath for giving us such a warm welcome and sharing her art-journey and thoughts with us. Thanks also to Judy Martin for introducing the evening.

Please note if you missed this event, the exhibition is open Wednesday 9 July – Saturday 12 July 10.00 am – 4.00 pm.
